Another Reason to #Homeschool: The Love of Learning

In general, home educators try to give their children a well-rounded education.  This can be done by teaching various subjects, going on various field trips, etc.  At the top of our list, is reading.  If a person can read, they can learn anything.  Underneath it all, I want my kids to love learning and have the desire to continue to learn throughout their lifetime. Without the love of learning, there will be no desire to do so. Without the desire to learn, one will never become a mature christian.

Unfortunately, our government schools don’t always foster this love for learning. Some of the local schools here have begun requiring homework for kindergartners. I can’t help but wonder what they do in class all day if they are now sending homework home. Those that appear to be bright are encouraged to go through testing to determine whether or not they qualify for the “gifted” program. The kids and parents are put under a lot of pressure by the school officials and told that this is a big deal. If the child misses qualifying by a few points, they are pressured to take the test again.

This is done all at the age of 5 or 6, and for many it is their first experience in a school environment. Why would any of these kids want to go back to school? Why would any of them have a positive impression of learning?

Thankfully with home education this can all be avoided. Children can be encouraged to learn at their own pace. Each student can have their own specialized program tailored just for them and not worry about being in special ed, the gifted program, or anything else. They are accepted as the beautiful individual God created them to be, while being stretched and pushed a little by their teacher who knows them better than anyone else in the world. They can actually enjoy learning and develop a desire to learn throughout their lifetime. With that, the possibilities are endless.

Why do You #Homeschool?

Handcuffs
Handcuffs (Photo credit: .v1ctor Casale.)

We all homeschool for different reasons.  Most of us homeshool for more than one reason.  Once you begin to homeschool, your reasons for doing so may change.

Homeschooling your children is a full-time “job;” and just like any other job, you have your good days and your bad days.  I know there were often days that I thought about how nice it would be to put my kids on the bus every morning.  There were also some days when they weren’t behaving that I would threaten to put them on the bus!  However, when it came down to it, I would never put them on the bus.  I know they knew that too.

When those not-so-good homeschooling days come along, it’s helpful to think about why you’re homeschooling.  It’s helpful to step back for a moment and look at the big picture.  Why am I doing this?  What am I trying to accomplish?  Are we making progress?  Are my children where they need to be now?  A little reflection can often keep you going.

Another thing that keeps me going is the news reports of what is happening in the government schools.  Reports like the one below convince me that many of our government schools are not a place for children.

Second-Grader Says School Put Him In Handcuffs For Misbehaving

Yes, a second grader at a Kansas City school was placed in handcuffs last week.

Kalyb told the station that kids were teasing and taunting him but nothing got physical. A teacher was unable to calm him down and he was taken to the principal’s office by a school security guard.

“We were halfway down the hall, he put handcuffs on and twisted my wrists a little,” Kalyb added.

The report never states that the child was not cooperating with the security guard.

A school’s spokesperson said the security officer followed the proper protocol to ensure everyone’s safety.

Everyone’s safety?  The report never mentions that the child had a weapon.  When was the last time you were afraid of a seven-year old?

Not only is this kid being bullied by the students at this school, he’s also being bullied by the adults.  I cannot imagine the trauma that has been inflicted upon this child.

We all get asked from time to time why we homeschool.  After 15 years, I have lots of reasons.  My answer will often vary depending on how ornery I’m feeling that day.  One of my answers is, “It keeps me out of jail.”  By that I mean that I don’t know how I’d react if my child were the seven-year old placed in handcuffs.  I’m grateful that I will never have to find out and that my child will never have to suffer the treatment that is handed out in government schools.

Why do you homeschool?

Another Reason to #Homeschool

I noticed this proudly displayed in the hallway of our local elementary school.  I’ve seen plenty of the student writing, and this clearly is not the writing of a first or even third grader.  I was also told recently that there are upwards of 70 staff members at this school.  Does not one person in this school know how to spell aluminum?  I know it’s an unusual word, but really!

State of the Hood

It’s another snow day. We got several inches of snow over the weekend, and it’s bitterly cold. Temps reached far below zero last night. At least we got some sunshine today. I think we made it all the way up to 18 degrees.

There was no school today, yet the school was open for their babysitting services. I still haven’t figured this one out. How is it that it’s too dangerous to come to school to learn but not too dangerous to come to school and be babysat all day?

How many children did I see outside shoveling driveways and sidewalks today? Not a one. Instead, I saw adults out using snow blowers while the kids stayed indoors watching television and playing video games.

State of the Hood: Poor and declining.

ABC Takes Guns into Elementary School and Hides them Amongst Children’s Toys and Backpacks

Guns
http://www.mysecuritysign.com

In a report called Young Guns, Diane Sawyer and David Muir wanted to show the American people what happens when you leave unattended guns in children’s toys and backpacks at school.  So, they broke several gun safety rules and federal law to do just that.  Not only did they leave unattended guns in the toys and backpacks of children, all this happened at an elementary school!

First the teacher showed the children the Eddie Eagle video and taught a lesson.  Then, the police came in and talked gun safety with the children.

Ignoring the number one gun safety rule (treat every gun as if it were loaded), the police came in two days later and hid unloaded guns amongst the children’s toys.  Keep in mind that this all took place at an elementary school where it is in violation of federal law to carry a firearm.   The teacher then ignores another very important gun safety rule (never leave guns unattended around children) and leaves the room.

The video below catches what happened when two boys found one of the guns.  The first thing they both did was look right down the barrel of the gun.

Here’s Diane Sawyer and her propaganda:

This whole incident brings on a tidal wave of emotions for me.  First of all, anger.  I’m angry that the parents would agree to let their children go through this experiment.  I can understand wanting to teach your kids a lesson about guns, but this isn’t the way to do it.  Responsible, or maybe even irresponsible parents, don’t leave guns amongst children’s toys and backpacks.  When children find guns in the home, it’s not because mom or dad left their .45 in the child’s toy box.

I’m angry that the teacher conducted this experiment and set the kids up.  She knew the kids would fail.  Surely these children have lost trust in her.

I’m angry at the police for bringing guns into the school and leaving them in the children’s toys for them to find.  They ignored all kinds of laws and gun safety rules.  Again, the people that are supposed to be looking out for these kids and that these children are supposed to respect and trust, have proven to be untrustworthy.  Why would anyone expect the kids to follow the rules when the adults aren’t even following the rules?

I’m also angry at ABC and Diane Sawyer for putting on this whole escapade.  Instead of reporting the news, she was making the news.  And the news that she did report, she didn’t do truthfully.

Most of all, I feel sadness for these children.  The lesson they’re going to learn is that their parents, teachers, and police officers set them up.  They broke laws and rules to supposedly teach them a lesson.  The lesson these children are going to go away with is that the people that are supposed to be looking out for you can’t always be trusted.  Very, very sad.

I would hope that there would be serious consequences for such a stunt, but I doubt it.  The teachers and police officers involved should be fired immediately.  The parents need to apologize to their children for doing something so stupid.  And I hope that America has enough sense to turn Diane Sawyer off.  Sadly, I doubt that any of this will happen.

And thank you Dana Loesch for speaking the truth:

Thankfully, those that are home educators can properly teach their children gun safety.  Responsible gun owners know that gun ownership is a lifestyle.  Home educators know that responsible gun ownership can be taught (legally, I might add) in their school whether they are gun owners or not.  What could be more fun than a field trip to the range?

Another Reason to Homeschool

Here’s a showcase at the entrance to an elementary school in my town.

IMG_20140119_172931

Here’s a closer look.

IMG_20140119_172908

I’m sure this is a funny book.  I’m sure the kids roar with laughter reading it.  But of all the books to showcase, why not some classics like The Story of Ping, Madeline, Tom Sawyer, etc?  Small kids are giggly enough and are learning proper social etiquette.  The last thing they need is to have the word “fart” or “farting” right in their face every day when they enter the school building.
