The news around the homeschooling community this week is how Subway discriminates against homeschoolers. Subway has a writing contest in which the rules state:
Contest is open only to legal US residents, over the age of 18 with children in either elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted. [Emphasis mine.]
This first got the attention of some of the email lists I’m on. Someone has even started a petition. Then I got a notice from American Family Association asking me to send an email to Subway’s president, to contact my local Subway store, and to tell all my friends. Home School Legal Defense Association also has an open letter to Subway on their website.
What has frustrated me about all of this, is that not one person has mentioned that this contest is also sponsored by Scholastic:
Scholastic Inc., 557 Broadway, New York, NY 10012
SFAFT, 488 Wheelers Farms Road, Milford, CT 06461
If you feel so compelled as to boycotte Subway and contact them, please do the same for Scholastic. They are just as much a guilty party in this scheme as Subway is.
