Huckabee praised parents who homeschool their children as an example of Americans who don’t want the government to get in their way.
“They’re not asking the government to fix it for them. They’re just saying don’t mess it up for us,” Huckabee said. “What’s wrong with a country that just lets its people be free? That’s what America is looking for today.”
Over the years, I’ve heard lots of reasons why people choose to homeschool, but I’ve never heard anyone state that they homeschool because they don’t want the government to get in their way. It is true that many people want the government out of their life as much as possible. Homeschooling is one way to accomplish this.
A survey from 2003 shows that parents gave these reasons as their most important reason for homeschooling:
- concern about the environment of other schools (31%)
- to provide religious or moral instruction (30%)
- dissatisfaction with the academic instruction available at other schools (16%)
Here’s another interesting Huckabee quote from the same article:
“I think it’s pretty obvious that a person who’s governed a state next to yours understands your life, what matters to people in Missouri, a whole lot more than a senator from Arizona or a governor from Massachusetts,” Huckabee said.
Who does Huckabee think he’s fooling? I have neighbors across the street that don’t understand my life or have a clue what matters to me. Does his being governor in a state next to mine factor in when deciding who to vote for? Not a chance.
Huckabee can spout out all the stupid rhetoric he wants. I believe most of America is smart enough to recognize it for what it is.
